The problem with equipment that rests
A heat pump or furnace that has not run since February will have collected dust on the burners or the strips, and any part that was marginal in the spring has had nine months to get worse. The failure does not happen gradually where you can see it. It happens on the first cold night, along with everyone else on your street.
What we check
Ignition and flame sensing on gas equipment, sequencer and element operation on electric strips, reversing valve and defrost on heat pumps, and the safety chain end to end. On anything gas fired we check the heat exchanger, because a cracked exchanger is a safety problem and not a comfort one.
